Stocks, Flows and Valuation Effects of Foreign Assets and Liabilities: Do They Matter?
Large holdings of foreign assets and liabilities, along with increasing relevance of valuation effects—capital gains or losses—have characterized global financial integration. In this paper, we assess empirically the implications of stocks, flows and valuation adjustments in external crises (current-account reversals, sudden stops and currency crises), sovereign credit ratings and the longrun real exchange rates (RER), in both industrial and developing economies. We find support for the view that foreign assets and liabilities are rather distinctive external holdings with different implications in the occurrence of external crisis. Valuation adjustments have an impact on crises, although quantitatively not very large. Portfolio liabilities (particularly equity) increase the probability of current-account reversals and currency crises, while the likelihood of sudden stops increases with the stock of foreign direct investment (FDI) assets. In the case of sovereign credit ratings, we find a noteworthy effect of the stock and flows of FDI liabilities on improving sovereign ratings. Finally, as for the RER, gross assets and liabilities appear equally important, but components of external holdings have considerably different effects. While the cumulative current account is associated with real depreciation, the valuation effect is strongly linked with real currency appreciations in developing economies.
Expecting the unexpected: Code-switching as a facilitatory cue in online sentence processing
Despite its prominent use among bilinguals, psycholinguistic studies reported code-switch processing costs (e.g., Meuter & Allport, 1999). This paradox may partly be due to the focus on the code-switch itself instead of its potential subsequent benefits. Motivated by corpus studies on CS patterns and sociopragmatic functions of CS, we asked whether bilinguals use code-switches as a cue to the lexical characteristics of upcoming speech. We report a visual world study testing whether code-switching facilitates the anticipation of lower-frequency words. Results confirm that US Spanish–English bilinguals (n = 30) use minority (Spanish) to majority (English) language code-switches in real-time language processing as a cue that a less frequent word would ensue, as indexed by increased looks at images representing lower- vs. higher-frequency words in the code-switched condition, prior to the target word onset. These results highlight the need to further integrate sociolinguistic and corpus observations into the experimental study of code-switching
Macroeconomics, Monetary Policy and the Central Bank´s Net Worth
This paper makes stochastic projections of the Central Bank of Chile’s (CBCh) balance sheet (stocks and flows) starting from the actual current negative net worth. These projections incorporate the effect on the balance sheet of several macroeconomic variables as well as alternative policy decisions, taking into account the uncertainty and risks inherent in the economy. The article describes and assesses the main causes of the present deficit. In the baseline scenario, the deterministic forecast shows that the Central Bank's net worth will increase slowly to reach positive values after 25 years. However, in the stochastic simulations the Bank's net worth will still be negative 25 years from now, with a 69 percent probability.
Geodesic Structure of Naked Singularities in AdS Spacetime
We present a complete study of the geodesics around naked singularities in
AdS, the three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime. These stationary
spacetimes, characterized by two conserved charges --mass and angular
momentum--, are obtained through identifications along spacelike Killing
vectors with a fixed point. They are interpreted as massive spinning point
particles, and can be viewed as three-dimensional analogues of cosmic strings
in four spacetime dimensions. The geodesic equations are completely integrated
and the solutions are expressed in terms of elementary functions. We classify
different geodesics in terms of their radial bounds, which depend on the
constants of motion. Null and spacelike geodesics approach the naked
singularity from infinity and either fall into the singularity or wind around
and go back to infinity, depending on the values of these constants, except for
the extremal and massless cases for which a null geodesic could have a circular
orbit. Timelike geodesics never escape to infinity and do not always fall into
the singularity, namely, they can be permanently bounded between two radii. The
spatial projections of the geodesics (orbits) exhibit self-intersections, whose
number is particularly simple for null geodesics. As a particular application,
we also compute the lengths of fixed-time spacelike geodesics of the static
naked singularity using two different regularizations.Comment: 22 pages, 6 tables and 4 figures containing 10 geodesics orbits. Some
clarifications have been included and some paragraphs were reorganized along
